This paper deals with the nature and rationale of nonprofits. It criticizes the approach of mainstream economics, which envisions nonprofits as a more or less close substitutive for the public sector. It elaborates on a well-known topic of economic literature—the lighthouse—to construe an analogue for non-profits organizations in order to comprehend a whole field of economic activities, that is, activities that are sustained through contributions rather than prices.
