Abstract

The subject of the paper is the scope of use of municipal companies by provincial capital cities in Poland. These companies run in all mentioned cities, but play different roles. There can be distinguished different types of companies commonly occurring in all large municipalities, but there are also other, which operate only in certain locations. The analysis demonstrates that the choice of local governments concerning the strategy of creation and use of companies does not depend only on the size of each cities. It is rather the mayor’s political decision whether the system of municipal companies is only for basic tasks, or consists of a multitude of subjects involved in atypical for local sphere of action.
