The main objective of the paper is to determine the environmental sustainability of FADN farms and its determinants by determining the effectiveness of the common agricultural policy subsidies for shaping a synthetic index of environmental sustainability. The synthetic index of environmental sustainability for the average farm in the region was determined by the Hellwig method. The differentiation of environmental sustainability has been carried out in three sections: in European regions, EU countries and economic classes. The increase in share of environmental payments and rural development in the total amount of subsidies has proved to be crucial for environmental sustainability, not just the increase in funds for this purpose. There is a general conclusion that single area payments do not help to achieve environmental sustainability, although this is a priority for the EU.
